I grew up in Dayton, Ohio, earned a geology degree from Wright State University, and then flew for the USAF for 24 years, where oddly my job was to avoid rocks. When I retired from active duty, my family and I moved back to Dayton where I now pursue another passion…photography.
Given my background, I love landscape photography where sunset and twilight are my favorite times of day. For me, success entails capturing planned scenes under the right light and weather, so I spend the afternoon’s watching the skies. If conditions look right, I head out.
Under these low light and temperamental weather conditions, exposures become more unforgiving, so I mitigate these effects through bracketing and long, steady exposures. Once every few trips, it all comes together, where my planning coincides with the right light and cloud alignment, resulting in a scene with amazing light!
The parks and vistas I shoot are often void of visitors during these hours leaving me to ponder if I was the only one witnessing the spectacle. In creating these images, its hard not to experience a sense of awe and wonder, thus I find sharing these decisive moments represent my calling.
